An Absolute Must!!

TrailBlazerSA, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
A slightly damp, blustery and frigid day but what a warm welcome we received. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The infrastructure has been sympathetically thought of an constructed and doesn't detract from the actual site. The Exhibition Centre and Shop is the perfect size and incredibly informative. Loved every minute of our visit. Located on the dramatic escarpment that snakes across northern England, the 360º views are quite simply breathtaking. It is an uphill walk but so worth it. This is the only spot where you can actually walk on top of the wall for about 150 meters. This really is a fantastic experience and an absolute must.

Living history

Michaelhouse69,
This site is part of Hadrians wall. Good to go to Steel Rig and walk there. The fort is so atmospheric surrounded by Northumbria . Almost expect to see Roman legionaries walking around. Step back into history. A wonderful North East gift to the Nation. Don’t miss it.

Wonderful Roman Fort Site

chicawinn, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
We came here by train from York to Haltwhistle and then a taxi from that village to the carpark at the Housesteads site. There is a long path uphill (it's more than .5 mile, but is a gentle slope with many curves in the path where you feel you can rest if needed). And the fort and views from it across the countryside are both awesome! It was drizzling the day we went, and there were very few people climbing among the ruins. It was wonderful to be able to walk among the stones defining the forts' interior and exterior, and to see the Roman latrine and storage rooms. The surrounding fields are hilly and dotted with sheep grazing the emerald grass. The fields are divided by more (low) stone walls that are newer then the Roman ruins sitting among them. There is a small museum near the top of the pathway but not so close that it intrudes on the fort itself. The Roman wall stretches out in 2 directions from the edges of the fort, following the undulations of the hills around. From the fort at the top of the hill you only hear the wind whistling around you and there is nothing to detract from the experience of being back in that time.. This is definitely one of the. best things to see in England.
